Riley Mother Baby Hospital of Kenya (RMBHK) provides a continuum of care for pregnant women and their babies. Estimates are that complications with pregnancy can affect up to 40% of women during pregnancy, delivery or in the immediate period after a baby is delivered. Up to 15% of women may have life threatening complications. The World Health Organization believes that sub-Saharan Africa has the highest maternal death rate in the world at 920 deaths per 100,000 live births. In developed countries, the maternal mortality rate is about 20 maternal deaths per 100,000 births. The data for newborn deaths is equally alarming. Estimates range from 30-50 neonatal deaths/1,000 live births, in contrast to 4 newborn deaths per 1,000 births in the US. RMBHK’s mission is to provide comprehensive, family-focused services to mothers and babies and to address the root causes of poor pregnancy and neonatal outcomes through education, training, and research.
